Psychiatric Referrals
The Problem
Couples counseling is challenging and demanding – it requires a lot of mental, emotional and physical energy to stay focused on the concepts, skills and technique necessary to learn.
Often there are other conditions present that need to be stabilized before effective work can be done in counseling. The following conditions or disorders may well require medication to help the client concentrate on the demanding work done in counseling:
- Mood disorders (depression, bipolar disorder and substance-induced mood disorders)
- Anxiety disorders (generalized anxiety; panic attacks; agoraphobia; social phobia; obsessive compulsive disorder; and post-traumatic stress disorder PTSD
- Infidelities
- Anger management and domestic violence
- Alcoholism and drug addiction
- Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), for children and adults
- Insomnia and sleep problems
- Psychotic disorders
- Pain management
- Other mental and physical conditions that require medication management
The Process
If there are additional conditions present, Sherwood Couples Counseling will recommend that you first consult your insurance provider who can identify an approved and participating psychiatric provider in your area. Where possible, we will assist all clients in finding a licensed physician who can assist in prescribing the necessary medications to help stabilize those disorders and conditions that may destabilize the therapeutic process.
Expected Results
When medications are prescribed, clients will find that they are more rested physically and that they are more mentally and emotionally alert. Increased concentration will allow them to learn more quickly, gain deeper insights into their situations and make necessary behavioral changes in support of the outcomes and goals they desire.
